Description

WHY WE LOVE IT 

Patek Philippe has long been known for its complicated watchmaking, but following the stock market crash of 1929, fewer clients had the means to purchase these high-end timepieces. After securing a controlling interest in the firm, Jean and Charles Henri Stern decided to enlist the help of an English designer named David Penney to create a simple watch that would come in at a lower price point and appeal to the firm’s clientele. 

Using the principles espoused by the Bauhaus school and its minimalist, function-first philosophy, Penney conceived the Calatrava, taking its name from the Spanish military order established in the 12th century which had become the symbol of Patek Philippe. Since its debut in 1932, the Calatrava has become a byword for a simple, time-only dress watch — even from brands other than Patek itself.

This particular Calatrava, a reference 3495J, stands out amongst other normal  Calatravas with what would have been considered an 'oversize' case at the time with hidden 'T' lugs. At 36mm in diameter, this 18k yellow gold case houses a beautiful sunburst silver dial with applied indices and a matching pencil handset, a signed, recessed crown, and Patek's Calibre 27-SC automatic-winding movement beating away within — all of which contribute to a unique wearing experience on the wrist.

This piece remains in outstanding overall condition and comes with an Extract from the Archives confirming original sale on 9/15/1965.

Sure, you could get yourself a modern dress watch that tells the time just fine — and that probably ends up in a drawer after a while. But a real Calatrava from the world’s greatest watchmaker is forever. 

OVERALL CONDITION

The case is in fantastic condition overall showing light signs of wear consistent with age and use. Sunburst silver dial with applied yellow gold 'baton' indices is in excellent condition with matching 'pencil' handset. Signed crown.

10-Day Returns For Timepieces:

Timepieces purchased online can be returned or exchanged within 10 days from when they are shipped or collected.

30-Day Returns For All Other Purchases:

All other online purchases can be returned or exchanged within 30 days from when they are shipped or collected.

On presentation of the original receipt, your purchases may be returned or exchanged at any of our store locations. Alternatively, you may elect shipping to our facility with all the original paperwork. All refunds must be credited to the same tender used for the original purchase. To return the online purchases through secure shipping service, please contact our client service team who will provide you the shipping label.

All returns or exchanges must be in new, unworn condition, with no scratches or markings, not sized or adjusted and in their original packaging and with warranty cards / certificated and instruction booklets.
